Obituary for John Kostuk

John Kostuk
John Kostuk, 97, of Trumbull, formerly of Stratford and Milford, CT, entered into eternal rest on January 11, 2018, in Bridgeport Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Florence Gaida. Born in Bridgeport, CT, on October 11, 1920, John was the third of five children of Ilya (Alexander) and Mary Lewko Kostuk. He attended Prospect School and then graduated from Bullard Havens Trade School. John was a member of the Holy Ghost Russian Orthodox Church as a youth, but later converted and became an active member of St. Mark’s Church in Stratford with his wife. John enlisted in the Navy on June 30, 1942, serving in military campaigns in the Pacific during WWII while stationed in Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Proud of his service, he would share stories of military operations and of swimming in shark-infested waters. On December 12, 1945, he was honorably discharged as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class and was awarded the America Theater Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and a Victory Medal. A member of American Legion Post 0207, John proudly wore his United States Navy Veteran’s hat with honor and deeply appreciated events that recognized Veterans and their service. On September 11, 1948, John married the love of his life, Flo. They enjoyed traveling to many places over their 44 years of marriage. John was devoted to her and a caregiver for many years prior to her death in 1992. John was employed as a Tool and Die Maker at Burndy and at Bic in Milford for many years until his retirement. John spent his final years at Middlebrook Farms Assisted Living. John’s witty and kind heart will be missed; his honorable and faithful service to his wife and to his country was admirable.
John is survived by his sister, Jennie Uliasz, of Stratford, a sister-in-law, Geraldine Kostuk of Mansfield, Texas, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Nina Plukas, of Trumbull, and his brothers, Nicholas of Newtown, and Michael of Mansfield, Texas.
Private services were held at Mount St. Peters Garden Mausoleum in Derby. The Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St. Bridgeport were entrusted with the services. For online condolences and to light a virtual candle visit us at commercehillfh.com
