Obituary for Genevieve Laskey
Genevieve, known as “Jeanne” for most of her life, was born raised in Connecticut. After graduation from Stratford High School, she received an Associate’s Degree from the Junior College of Connecticut and then a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Columbia University in New York City. She started her career when physical therapy was evolving as a profession, working with children with polio at the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center. Jeanne was a pioneer in home-bound therapy, treating patients with polio and multiple sclerosis who required continuous therapy but were unable to get to a treatment center. After polio was eradicated, she continued primarily as a geriatric specialist for home bound patients, and later was an in-house therapist at the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield. Known for her cheery nature and positive attitude, she was loved by her patients and colleagues.
In 1949, Jeanne married Eugene Laskey, and they made their life together in Trumbull, CT where they raised two daughters. After Eugene’s death, Jeanne moved back to Stratford where she was an avid quilter, crafter, theater and hospital volunteer, traveler and Grandmother Par Excellence. She was an active member of the Connecticut Piecemakers Quilt Guild where she made many friends, entered regional competitions and made beautiful quilts donated to hospitals and schools. She is survived by her daughters; Carole Laskey Waz of Trumbull and Barbara Laskey Weinreich of New York City, sons-in-law Thomas Waz and Don Weinreich, and grandchildren Anna Waz, Kate Weinreich and Max Weinreich. Her ebullient and life affirming joy was a gift to all.
In abiding with Genevieve wishes, calling hours have been omitted. There will be a memorial service at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull on April 7, 2017 at 3pm. The Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St. Bridgeport has been entrusted with the services.
